Using the Sweep tool to make a shape follow a path

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) with Onshape

🕑 This lesson will take about 6 minutes

In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Sweep tool in Onshape. This tool allows us to create complex 3D objects by sweeping a 2D profile along a path.

To begin, we will start by creating a new document in Onshape and drawing a simple 2D profile using the sketch tools. This profile will be used as the cross-section of the 3D object that we create with the Sweep tool.

Next, we will draw a path for the Sweep tool to follow. This path can be a straight line, an arc, or a more complex shape that you create using the sketch tools.

Once we have our profile and path defined, we will select the Sweep tool and specify the profile and path that we want to use. We can preview the resulting 3D object and make any necessary adjustments to the path or the orientation of the profile.

In the example below, a circle was created in a sketch on the front plane, and an arc was created in a sketch on the right plane. The arc was used as a path for the circle shape to follow using the Sweep tool to create the 3D model.
